My iPhone storage is full. What should I do?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Photos and videos are usually what fill an iPhone. You can free up space without losing them by keeping the full-size copies in iCloud and smaller copies on the phone.
To free up space:
1. Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage to see what is using the space.
2. Turn on iCloud Photos and choose Optimise iPhone Storage. You may need a larger iCloud plan if you have a lot of photos.
3. Delete apps you no longer use, and clear old WhatsApp videos under WhatsApp, Settings, Storage and data.
4. Empty the Recently Deleted album (deleted photos sit there, still using space, for 30 days).
We free up space safely, back up your photos first and show you how to find them afterwards, at your home in Swindon. See Phone Storage Full & Photo Clean-up.

How do I transfer WhatsApp to a new phone?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Back up WhatsApp on your old phone first, then restore it when you set up WhatsApp on the new phone with the same number. If you set up the new phone and skip the restore step, your chats can be lost.
Do it in this order:
1. On the old phone, open WhatsApp, go to Settings, Chats, Chat backup, and tap Back up.
2. Keep the old phone charged and switched on, with the same SIM and phone number.
3. Install WhatsApp on the new phone and verify your number.
4. When WhatsApp offers to restore or transfer your chats, say yes and keep both phones on the same Wi-Fi.
5. Moving between Android and iPhone uses a different method: choose the WhatsApp transfer option during the new phone's setup.
We move WhatsApp, photos and contacts to your new phone for you at home in Swindon, and set up your passcode and backups while we are there. See Move to a New Phone.

Can deleted photos be recovered?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Often, yes, as long as you stop using the device straight away. Deleted photos usually stay on the drive or memory card until new files are saved over them, so the sooner you act, the better the chance.
What to do:
1. Stop using the phone, camera or computer, and do not take new photos on it.
2. Check the Recently Deleted album on an iPhone, or the Bin in Google Photos or Windows. Photos stay there for up to 30 days.
3. Check whether the photos were backed up to iCloud, Google Photos or OneDrive.
4. If a hard drive is clicking or the computer will not start, switch it off. Clicking usually means physical damage that needs a specialist laboratory.
We look at your device at your home in Swindon and tell you what can be saved, and what it will cost, before you pay for any recovery work. See Data Recovery & Backup.

How much does CCTV installation cost in Swindon?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

The cost of CCTV installation depends on how many cameras you need, how far the cables have to run and which recorder you choose. We visit first for a free site survey in Swindon, then give you a fixed price before any work starts.
What affects the price:
1. Number of cameras: most homes need two to four, covering the front door, driveway and back garden.
2. Wired or wireless: wired PoE cameras (Power over Ethernet, where one cable carries both power and video) are more reliable than Wi-Fi cameras.
3. Cable runs: drilling through walls and running cable through the loft takes longer in some houses.
4. Storage: a recorder in your home, cloud storage, or both.
Once it is fitted, you can watch live and recorded footage on your phone. We install CCTV for homes, shops and small businesses across Swindon and Wiltshire. See CCTV Installation.

A scammer had remote access to my computer. What should I do?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Disconnect the computer from the internet straight away, then call your bank on the number on the back of your card. Do not use the computer for banking or email again until it has been checked, because scammers often leave a program behind that lets them back in.
Do these in order:
1. Switch off the Wi-Fi on the computer, or unplug the network cable.
2. Call your bank and tell them a stranger had access to your computer.
3. From a different phone or computer, change the passwords for your email and online banking.
4. Do not delete or reinstall anything yourself, so nothing the scammer left behind is missed.
5. Report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.
These scams catch careful, sensible people every day, so please do not feel embarrassed. We remove the scammer's software and secure your accounts at your home in Swindon, and you can call 0800 987 5628 for free advice first. See Virus Removal & Scam Clean-up.

Windows 10 support has ended. What should I do?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Microsoft stopped sending security updates to Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Your computer still works, but it is easier for scammers and viruses to get in, so you should upgrade to Windows 11 or plan to replace the computer.
What to do now:
1. Check whether your computer can upgrade: open Settings, then Windows Update. If it offers Windows 11, your computer is ready.
2. Back up your photos and documents to OneDrive or an external drive before you upgrade.
3. Start the upgrade when you have an hour or two to spare, and leave the computer plugged in.
4. If Windows Update says your computer cannot run Windows 11, look at Microsoft's paid Extended Security Updates before buying a new computer.
We check your computer, back up your files and do the upgrade for you at home in Swindon, then make sure your printer and email still work. See Windows 11 Upgrade.

My laptop is running slow. What can I do?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Most slow laptops do not need replacing. The usual causes are too many programs starting up with Windows, a nearly full hard drive or an update stuck in the background, and all three can be fixed.
Before you call anyone, try this:
1. Restart properly (Start, Power, Restart) and let any updates finish.
2. Open File Explorer, click This PC and look at the C: drive. If the bar is red, delete or move some large files.
3. Press Ctrl, Shift and Esc together to open Task Manager, click Startup apps and turn off the programs you do not need when the laptop starts.
4. Run a full scan in Windows Security to rule out a virus.
If it is still slow after all that, we find the real cause at your home in Swindon and tell you honestly whether it is worth fixing. Labour is £40 an hour. See Slow Computer Fix.

Why does my Wi-Fi keep dropping out?

Answer from the Computer IOT Support team

Wi-Fi usually drops out because the signal is too weak where you are, the router needs a restart or is overheating, or neighbouring networks are interfering. It is rarely the broadband line itself, and most causes can be fixed without paying for a faster package.
Try these first:
1. Restart the router: switch it off at the wall, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on.
2. Move the router out of cupboards and away from the TV, mirrors and fish tanks. Higher up and in the open is best.
3. If your router shows two network names, connect laptops and TVs to the 5 GHz one (the faster, shorter-range signal) when you are in the same room as the router.
4. Check whether it drops out on every device or just one. If only one, the problem is that device, not your Wi-Fi.
5. Plug a laptop into the router with a network cable. If it still drops out on the cable, the fault is probably on the line, and your provider needs to know.
Still dropping out? We test your Wi-Fi room by room at your home in Swindon and fix whatever is causing it. Callout is free within 15 miles of Swindon. See Wi-Fi Keeps Dropping Out.
